The Works of W.O. Raymond, 1853-1923

William Odber Raymond began his introduction to the book Glimpses of the Past History of the River St. John with a description of himself: “Born and reared upon the banks of the River Saint John, I have always loved it, and have found a charm in the study of everything that pertains to the history of those who have dwelt beside its waters.” This served him well as one of the most prolific writers of the history of the Saint John River.

Born in Woodstock in 1853, Raymond became a priest and eventually Anglican Archdeacon for Saint John. His longest career assignment was with Saint Mary’s Church in Saint John. He was busy with official duties and involved himself in debates on religious and social issues of the time. This may explain why much of his writing was in the form of short articles rather than books. Nonetheless, he was able to produce two substantial books from collections of his articles, in addition to a landmark work entitled The Winslow Papers.

Raymond was writing before the era of more modern New Brunswick historians. He was sometimes quick to praise a hero when modern historians would be more reserved, and perhaps more objective. He was also guilty on occasion of glossing over or omitting historical episodes that he did not want to deal with. He remains a giant in New Brunswick studies, however, and it would be difficult to find anyone with a better reputation for reliability.

Raymond’s production of articles was staggering. I have not found a full list of his works, and the one in this blog is as complete as I could make it. This list is not complete, however. He was a regular contributor to the New Brunswick Historical Society, for example, but I only have access to Volumes 1 and 4 of that collection. Volumes 2, 3 and maybe 5 will include other articles. There may also be articles in Saint John Daily Telegraph which were not copied into his book Glimpses of the Past.

Online sources are included where they exist, but these are not exclusive. Some titles will be available from multiple sources. Daniel F. Johnson’s New Brunswick Historical Journal (1991) is given as an alternate source in some cases. That journal was sold by subscription, is out of print, and is quite rare. There will be library and archive copies, however.

  1. Really looking forward to reading all this information. Many of my ancestors came to New Brunswick in the early 1760’s and the other group from the same time period went to Nova Scotia.

    Thanks,
