Reversing Falls – Pictures

Following are four pictures of bridges over the Reversing Falls in Saint John, N.B. Details of and stories about the highway suspension bridge and the original railway bridge (both now replaced) can be found elsewhere in this blog.

Number 1: The roadway suspension bridge. The first railway bridge is under construction in the background, but no steelwork is erected yet. Therefore, the picture is from 1884.

Number 2: The first railway bridge is under construction with most of the steelwork up. Therefore, the picture is from 1885. The roadway suspension bridge is in the background.

Reversing Falls 1

Number 3: The first railway bridge is completed, and this looks like an opening ceremony. Therefore, the picture is from July, 1885.

Reversing Falls 4

Number 4: The first railway bridge is completed but not replaced by the current bridge (pre-1921). The suspension bridge behind is gone, and replaced by the current bridge (post-1915). Therefore, the picture is from between 1915 and 1921.
