Signatures of Sunbury County Ancestors

These signatures belong to ancestors of my sons. The first three generations are excluded, so that the first signature is Number 8 from the ancestral chart, for example. These are Sunbury County names, and other lines of descent are excluded.

There are proxy signatures, in addition to genuine signatures and witnessed marks. Proxy signatures are signatures signed on someone else’s behalf and are supposed to have had the notation “L.S.”, in a diamond-shaped frame or circle. The notation is sometimes missing.

A proxy signature did not always indicate that the person could not write their name. Signatures were sometimes made by a Justice of the Peace as a courtesy, or because the JP did not want anyone touching his book! Many proxy signatures were for people who could not write their names, however.

On the other hand, a witness’s signature was more likely to be genuine and less likely to be made pro forma by someone else without acknowledging the fact. This was to ensure that the signatures were legally defensible.

I have indicated which signatures I think are proxy signatures where there might be doubt.

8. William Harrison (Harry) Wood Born 24 Aug 1863 in French Lake, New Brunswick. Died 29 Dec 1927 in Chipman, New Brunswick while working on the railway.  Married Nettie Sarah Bunker on 15 Oct 1890 in Fredericton. An image taken from inside the wooden cover of his oil stone. Early-1900s, and possibly older.

9. Nettie Sarah Bunker Born 4 Jul 1868 in Tracyville, New Brunswick. Died 28 Jun 1943 in Three Tree Creek, New Brunswick. Her signature as witness to the marriage of son Clarence on December 17, 1935.

17. Fennetta Elizabeth Smith Born 1842 or 1843 in French Lake, New Brunswick. Died 11 Feb 1897 in French Lake. Signature from a Land Registry transaction, April 17, 1891. This is possibly a proxy signature. The spelling of her name varies widely, even on official documents.

28. Perly Edward Seely Born 19 Apr 1851 in Blissville, New Brunswick. Died 9 Oct 1914 in Blissville. Married Marilla Myrtis Mersereau on 13 Sep 1875 in Bangor, Maine. Signature from a land transaction of May 12, 1883. From the original document; appears to be a genuine signature.

From a land sale of March 14, 1876. This is an example, where the Justice of the Peace required that Sarah use her ‘X’ but did not so require Andrew. Andrew would readily testify to the validity of the land sale which he initiated, but someone might still dispute Sarah’s willingness to the transaction.

35.       Sarah Ann Till Born about 1812 in French Lake, New Brunswick. Died after 1881 in French Lake. From the above land sale of March 14, 1876.

36. Samuel Bunker Born in 1788 in Mount Desert, Maine. Died 16 Jun 1872 in Rusagonis, New Brunswick. Married Rebecca Thomas on 29 Jan 1821 in Burton, New Brunswick. From a land transaction of April 25, 1849.

41.       Mary Ann Hoyt Born 16 May 1805 in Sunbury County, New Brunswick. Died 11 Apr 1867 in Blissville Parish, New Brunswick. From a land sale of October 25, 1852. Abner’s signature on the same document was also a proxy signature (L.S.). This demonstrates that a proxy signature did not necessarily indicate that the person could not sign their name. Mary Ann used an ‘X’, however.

62.       William Henry Smith Born 1 Jun 1800 in Geary, New Brunswick. Died 3 Mar 1860 in Geary. Married Rebecca Elizabeth Boone on 23 Sep 1827 in Maugerville, New Brunswick. From a land sale of March 1, 1860. That is a seal to the right, not an ‘L.S.’ in a diamond. This could be a genuine signature.

64.       Daniel Wood Born 30 Jun 1764. Died 21 Aug 1847 in French Lake, New Brunswick. Married Ann (Annie) Morgan about 1787/1788. Left hand signature from a land petition of July 3, 1799 – likely a proxy signature. Right hand signature from a land petition of July 14, 1812.

  1. I really enjoyed your last post! My 5th great-grandparents are Zopher Bedford Phillips and Nancy Phillips. If I may ask, do you know who they sold the land to or bought it from? Thank you and I always look forward to your posts!

    • Hello Uriah, That post was a little unusual and I’m glad that you liked it. My Phillips information is a little thin, and is mostly genealogical without family history. I therefore cannot help with the land sale question. John

    • Uriah, My Father once told me that the property he lives on used to be an original Phillips land grant. My G-G Grandfather bought the property in 1901… The land is the first farm on the left hand side on the Phillips road.

    • Hi David, I just got a new computer tower and, so far, have not been able to revive my genealogical database. So I can’t be much help now, but maybe later.

  3. Hi John, I hope you got your database revived!
I am Bev Ott, the daughter of Esther Elizabeth Foss. Our first relative to come to Canada was Elias Foss.
I’m just starting to collect any information I can about the Foss line, and particularly about John Foss, born October 16, 1787 and then his son John, born May 18, 1815, born in French Lake, NB.
    Thanks for this posting.
